UV Protection
UV Protection
UV protection is so much more than just protecting ourselves from sunburn! It’s around us day in and day out no matter if we can see or feel it. A big hat, prescription sunnies and SPF should be with you at all times.
You’ve heard the terms UVA & UVB, but what are they and why are we protecting ourselves from them?
UVB – remember UVBurning - contains a lot of heat and the one that gives us sunburn. Biggest cause for sun cancers. Has a short wavelength that can penetrate into the epidermal layers of the skin and effect all the cell’s. The more our melanocytes get damaged (you’ll find them at the base of the epidermis) the more it impacts them to normally produce pigment. This is what we see a lot of from clients when their concerns are about hypopigmentation (lighter or no pigment patches) or hyperpigmentation (too much pigment and parker patches). UVB is strongest when the sun is high in the sky and during the middle of the day.
UVA – remember UVAging - plays a huge roll in premature ageing in the skin. Has a very small wave length which means it doesn’t only go into the epidermis, but past it and into the dermis. UVA can do all the damage that UVB can cause, but it will also accelerate the breakdown of our proteins in the dermal tissue which are collagen and elastin. As a result, our skin will look older much much faster than what it should. With UVA, you don’t feel it and it doesn’t cause sunburn – a secret assassin! When the sun is up, UVA is around. No matter if it’s a sunny day, cloudy day, winter or summer, UVA is the same strength. It’s around all day very day no matter what.
